ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics 2008 AAPG-SEG Spring Break Student Expo hosts the regional AAPG Barrel Competition - OU's Team Wins.
As part of this past weekend's AAPG-SEG Spring Break Student Expo, the ConocoPhillips School of Geology and Geophysics hosted the regional AAPG Barrel Competition. This international competition was begun last year by AAPG. Participation is open to university geoscience departments worldwide and involves developing oil and gas exploration drilling prospects using a real industry data set provided by AAPG. Individual teams consist of 5 graduate students.
For the students, this is a very time consuming effort, consisting of loading a large volume of data into our interpretation systems (not an easy task), developing an understanding of the geology and exploration history of the area, then doing their own geologic interpretation of the data, and selecting a series of drilling targets. The OU team worked on a data set from onshore Australia, and developed a portfolio of 7 drillable prospects, which were prioritized by Risk Analysis.
Last year, 8 teams from around the world participated and OU won 3rd place. This year, over 30 schools are participating, so AAPG decided to hold regional competitions, with the winner of each region going to the annual AAPG Convention in April to compete for the international championship. The University of Oklahoma's CPSGG team won the regional championship on Saturday, beating out OSU and Tulsa University for the right to compete at the convention.
Members of the winning team are Elizabeth Baruch, Roderick Perez, Romina Portas, Carlos Russian, and Carlos SantaCruz, all M.S. students in the School. Advisors are Professors Roger Slatt, Kurt Marfurt, Larry Grillot, and Roger Young. Assistance in data loading was provided by Tim Kwiatkowski and additional coaching was provided by Gustavo Diaz, who was on last year's winning team.
